Show Notes:

Director Spotlight: John Ford

John Ford is one of the great directors of the American studio system. The IMDb lists 144 films to his credit, starting in 1917 and continuing through 1976. Ford is one of the most prolific of the great directors, churning out work at a rate typical of directors from the studio era, which makes discussing his career difficult.

He is most closely associated with the western, particularly his collaborations with John Wayne, which include Stagecoach (1939), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), and especially The Searchers (1956).

In addition to westerns, Ford is also known for several very powerful character dramas, including The Grapes of Wrath (1940), The Quiet Man (1952), and the Best Picture winner from 1941: How Green Was My Valley, the film that famously beat Citizen Kane for the Oscar that year. Ford himself won four Best Director awards.

Trivia Question: First Batman Actor

Holy Trivia Question, Batman! Turns out the Dark Knight is a bit older than many realize — as evidenced by the fact that this week’s mystery actor was playing him quite some time ago.

Again, I encoded the MP3 file for this episode at a higher bit rate than normal. I’ll fix this when I get home, so if you prefer better quality, download the episode now. If you prefer a smaller file size, wait until tonight or tomorrow.

Was the background noise in the segment on John Ford there on purpose? It almost sounded like it was supposed to be “old-timey” sounding, like scratches on an old record, but if so I didn’t see how it really fit in with the topic of the segment.

    The noise was unintentional.

I thought that was like, rain… or something.

I think I would have put “First Blood” on my unfairly maligned movies list.

I want to see Alan Ladd as Batman.

So is BOOM! like a POTC/Jackie Chan/Plan 9 From Outer Space crossover?
While I was listening to that segment, I couldn’t help thinking back to the old Looney Tunes episode in which Daffy Duck pitches a feverish movie idea to someone off screen. Now Sam = Daffy Duck in my head.

The Pitch segment had me continuously cracking up. If the other people on the bus hadn’t had their own earbuds and thus just as oblivious to the world as I, they would have been wondering at the crazy cackling girl. Great job.
