A relatively new industry and a relatively new product means a relatively new export. In the 1920s, American studios were eager to sell their product in foreign markets, but it’s not as simple as that. Do the foreign markets have the theaters to show films in? What are the import tariffs going to be? And to wrap us back to the promise given at the end of Episode 39, what are the censorship laws in these foreign markets that imported American films will be subject to?

So there’s this hotel room in New York City, and anyone who goes in dies in under an hour. Yeah, it sounds silly, but 1408 by director Mikael HÃ¥fström (making his first big-budget film) is a pretty effective one-room horror flick for most of its running time. If it runs out of gas sometime in the third act, at least it was a good ride getting there.

Movies seem to be particularly well suited for satire, and political satire in particular. We came up with so many great political satires, it was difficult to prune them out to six apiece for Episode 39. But we persevered, and we emerged triumphant. What are your favorite political satires?
As always, we recommend listening to the episode before reading further.

I always thought “funnily” should be a word, perhaps just because it would make such an appropriate funny word. Anyway, in this outtake from the Top 6 segment of Episode 38, Stephen even flubs his own correction.

In 1998, the American Film Institute polled some 1500 film critics, historians, and industry leaders and came up with a list of 100 of the greatest, most historically significant films of all time. Ten years later, they did it again, and the television special aired last night.

To Catch a Thief gets lovingly restored for a new DVD release, and here’s all you’d ever want to know about it.
Michael Apted (The “Up” Documentaries, The World Is Not Enough) will direct The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
Marc Forster (Monster’s Ball, Finding Neverland) will direct the 22nd James Bond film, which is apparently at least somewhat a continuation of the story of Casino Royale.
Indiana Jones 4 is finally starting principal photography.
Ratatouille is the best film since Undercover Brother.

Usually when we think of musicals, we think of classic Broadway or MGM spectacles, but starting on the fringes of filmmaking and emerging into the forefront are rock and roll musicals, which is some ways make up a genre all its own. It’s not just the music that’s different, it’s a whole different cultural mentality and value system that comes with it. When compiling our lists for Episode 38’s Top 6 Rock and Roll Movies segment, we discovered that there actually aren’t that many good ones, but maybe we’re not the people to ask about that anyway. Still, we were able to come up with six favorites apiece, and here they are. Chime in with yours!
As always, we recommend listening to the episode before reading further.
