Vintage: Best of 1928

Posted in Vintage at 3:24 pm by Sam

In 1928, the movie industry was as obsessed with recognizing its own accomplishments as it is today. And let’s face it: we are too. Reflecting on the year’s best every year, or the summer’s best every summer, or the decade’s best every decade, is a way of championing the movies that have made us think and feel and love. Movies stir within us strong emotions, some more than others, and recognizing accomplishments in the art and craft of filmmaking is a way of expressing those reactions. And we’re organizational beings by nature. We classify and sort and arrange and label, because that’s how we make sense of the world. If we do that, not only does it help us identify how we feel about things and make sense of the world, but it’s a way of communicating with others, too. Hey, if you loved the sixth best tearjerker of the year, you’ll really love these other five!

Top 6: Movies We’ve Seen Over and Over

Posted in Top 6 at 10:34 am by Sam

Episode 35’s Top 6 segment is about the movies we’ve seen over and over again. There are tens of thousands of movies out there, so why do we sometimes pick the same ones to watch over and over? Some of us do it more than others, but probably all of us have at least a title or two that we keep coming back to. In many cases, these may not even be our favorite movies. What are yours?

As always, we recommend listening to the episode before reading further.

Blooper: Lightning

Posted in Bloopers at 10:50 am by Sam

Sometimes a blooper gets by both of us, and it has to be fixed with editing. Here’s a bit where I say “lightning” instead of “lighting,” but fortunately I’d said “lighting” earlier, and I could rearrange the audio a bit so that it sounded right in the final cut of the segment.

Vintage: Grauman’s Chinese Theater

Posted in Vintage at 10:26 am by Sam

Grauman’s Chinese Theater, arguably the most famous movie theater in the world, opened on May 18, 1927. It resides at 6925 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, and one of the most famous things about it is the forecourt, where handprints, footprints, and signatures of Hollywood stars appear in the cement blocks.

Top 6: Funniest Movie Titles

Posted in Top 6 at 4:59 am by Sam

Episode 34’s Top 6 segment is short and sweet. What are the funniest movie titles? What makes this list interesting and different is that you don’t have to have seen the movies to pick them. We don’t really care if the movies themselves are funny, or even if they’re supposed to be — all we’re concerned about is whether the titles themselves are funny.

What are your favorite funny movie titles?

As always, we recommend listening to the episode before reading further.

Not Just a Movie

Posted in Links at 3:00 pm by Sam

Some movies aren’t just movies. Some movies have the power to capture the imagination in such a compelling way that it becomes an obsession.

This article, a reflection on Star Wars, which was released 30 years ago this month, is a beautifully compelling account of one man’s love affair with a movie. Although it’s about Star Wars — and there is no shortage of Star Wars obsession in the world — swap the details out, and it would serve as a wonderful expression of someone else’s obsession with some other movie.

What is it about a series of sounds and images that can compell the mind so? I don’t even know. But they have that power, and that’s why I love the movies.
