For Episode 22, our Top 6 list is about movies where it’s important which cut you see of it. These days, director’s cuts and special editions are getting more and more popular. For many of these, it doesn’t matter a whole lot which version you see. One version of a movie might give you more or less than another, but both versions are essentially the same experience. But there are several cases where different cuts of the same movie are vastly different experiences. Here are the six that matter most to each of us.
We missed a couple of high-profile examples, and surely there are others that are not as high-profile but make just as much difference. What are your favorites?
As always, we recommend listening to the episode before reading further.

Editor’s Note, 2/27/07: Hear our thoughts on this year’s Oscars in Episode 22 of our podcast.
It’s still too early to have organized thoughts to present here, but I wanted to open this thread for discussion of the Oscar results, if any of you are interested in pursuing that. I’ll probably post a comment here myself later, and of course we’ll cover the Oscar results on this week’s show.

While recording the Top 6 segment from Episode 20, I discovered that “chopsocky” is much easier to write than to read.

This was how the closing comments of Episode 12 were originally recorded. As Stephen has confessed before, he has a hard time listening when people other than him are talking.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, or AMPAS, is primarily known for hosting the Academy Awards. This year’s awards air this Sunday night, and so I thought it would be a good opportunity to look back at some vintage materials about AMPAS way back at its inception.

We’ve got something a little different for Episode 21’s Top 6 list, because it’s about movies you can’t see and will never be able to see.
Movies that were never made count. There are plenty of situations where a movie was in the process of being made and, for some reason, was never completed. There is always a chance that a movie with a troubled production might finally come together. But we’re talking about specific incarnations of a film that will absolutely never exist.
Lost films also count — movies that were made but subsequently lost or destroyed, and no known copies are likely to exist. Of course, there’s always a chance that a lost film will be recovered, but we’re (unfortunately) pretty sure about the ones we’ve chosen for our lists.
What movies do you want to see that you’ll never be able to?
As always, we recommend listening to the episode before reading further.

One of the problems with short films is the scarcity of distribution opportunities, and every year there are three categories’ worth of Oscar-nominated short films that nobody has seen or, unless you’re an Academy member, can see. The Internet has changed that a bit, and for the last couple years, some of the short films become available online.
This year, you can watch two of the Best Animated Shorts and one of the Best Live Action Shorts online, right now. This includes Disney’s “The Little Matchgirl,” an absolutely wonderful tearjerker adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen story.
Here’s the guide to the Oscar nominated shorts of 2006.

I was writing up a post about President’s Day and presidential movies, but it was a lot harder to come up with titles I actually liked than I thought it would be, and then I got distracted by this (after the jump):
