Top 6: The Horror of the Unseen

Posted in Top 6 at 5:00 am by Sam

Our special Halloween Top 6 list for Episode 5 is about horror movies where what’s scary isn’t what you see on the screen but rather the suggestion of what you don’t see. Of course, horror movies can be scary in different ways, but we have a particular appreciation for scary movies that appeal to the imagination and our natural fears of the unknown, because this tends to provoke stronger reactions than anything a movie can explicitly show us.

So what are your favorite “unseen horror” movies?

As always, we recommend listening to the episode before reading further.

Strokes of Good Fortune

Posted in Side Topics at 11:14 am by Sam

Sometimes great movies seem to come together like strokes of good fortune. For many a great movie, you can read just a little of the behind-the-scenes story with the realization that that movie is something of a minor miracle. It’s a topic far, far too broad to cover with just this one post, for there are a lot of great movies and hence a lot of minor miracles, but here are a few of my favorite narrow escapes.

Movie Puzzle

Posted in Links at 11:42 pm by Sam

This is a neat movie puzzle. It’s a painting that contains pictorial representations of the titles of 50 “dark” movies, mostly horror movies but also a couple of dark thrillers. Click on a clue to submit a guess. Enter the title. If it’s right, the entry box will turn green, and the clue will become darkened. Some are easy. Some are hard.

Star Wars

Posted in Side Topics at 12:00 pm by Sam

By popular request, I’m opening up a Star Wars thread. It’s funny — the Star Wars movies, especially since the Special Editions and the prequels, are among the most discussed movies of all time. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are the most discussed movies of all time. But that’s what I’m asked to open a thread for.

I’m sure what will be said in this thread has all been said before. Not that I don’t think we can’t potentially devise interesting variations on familiar perspectives. But these conversations do tend to devolve into checklists of opinions on a stock set of issues. Is Star Wars or Empire Strikes Back the best of the series? Is Darth Maul cooler or less cool than Boba Fett? Are the prequels horrible, or completely horrible? Would you rather be handcuffed to Jar Jar or thrown into the Sarlaac pit?

My answers to these sorts of questions tend to land me squarely between two fervent camps, thereby making me an enemy to both. But I’m not an enemy. I’m an island to myself.

It’s a Bad, Bad, Bad, Bad Theater Experience

Posted in Side Topics at 3:00 am by Stephen

In the post about good movie theaters Dave suggested it’d be more fun to talk about bad movie theaters. I’m not interested in hearing a whole lot about specific theaters that are just kind of crummy, but if you have a particular experience that’s so bad it’s entertaining, here’s the place to share it. I already talked about my experience with Adaptation in Episode 4, but I have more. Keep reading for some of my worst experiences.

A Shameless Plea For Help

Posted in From the Editors at 11:13 pm by Stephen

I’d like to start this shameless plea with a big thanks to all you loyal listeners out there, as both Sam and I have been thrilled with the positive response so far. One of the challenges in making a podcast is getting the word out there that we exist, and this is where we could use your help. Keep reading for some ways you can help get the word out, if you’re so inclined.

A Few Good Movie Theaters

Posted in Side Topics at 12:00 pm by Stephen

We talked about the theater-going experience in Episode 4, and as the guy on the side of the theaters, I thought it would be useful to point out a few really good movie theaters. These are theaters embody what the theatrical experience should be all about.
