Top 6: Movies That Play With Perspective

Posted in Top 6 at 4:59 am by Sam

For Episode 43, our Top 6 list is about movies that play with perspective. Of all our Top 6 topics, this is probably the one Sam is personally most interested in and fascinated by. One of the great powers of the medium of film is that it can show us different perspectives. Normally in real life, we’re locked into our own bodies and confined to viewing the world through our own eyes. Movies can release us from that and show us things through other perspectives.

All movies are dependent upon their perspective of the subject matter, but some movies take it a step further and delve into the vast potential of deliberately using perspective to achieve some kind of effect. There’s a huge diversity of things you can accomplish doing this, and we’ve covered a good portion of that range with our picks.

What are your favorite movies that play with perspective?

As always, we recommend listening to the episode before reading further.

Top 6: Movies You’d Like To See Remade

Posted in Top 6 at 4:59 am by Sam

In Episode 42, our Top 6 list is about movies we’d like to see remade. Normally we scratch our heads and roll our eyes when a new remake is announced, because Hollywood tends to remake movies that are already great and successful. What they should be doing is remaking movies that had great ideas but weren’t executed as well as they could have been. There’s no need to remake a perfect movie, but every reason to try to regain lost potential.

What movies would you like to see remade?

As always, we recommend listening to the episode before reading further.

Top 6: Film Noir

Posted in Top 6 at 4:59 am by Sam

For Episode 41’s Top 6 segment, we tried to pick the best six films noir. We covered film noir back in Episode 20, and here is a loosely connected continuation of that discussion. As it turned out, though, neither one of us could choose how to prune down the possibilities — there are just too many great ones — and so Sam restricted himself to only choosing classic noir films and still wound up with seven, and Stephen gave up trying to rank the movies and just contented himself with picking six great films representative of the genre.

What are your favorites?

As always, we recommend listening to the episode before reading further.

Top 6: Unknown Movies

Posted in Top 6 at 4:59 am by Sam

Some great movies never get the recognition they probably deserve. Most of us have some favorite movies nobody else has ever heard of. Most of them are different from everybody else’s (or they wouldn’t fit the category). We wanted to use Episode 40’s Top 6 segment to recommend our own favorite inexplicably unknown films.

What are your favorites?

As always, we recommend listening to the episode before reading further.

Top 6: Political Satires

Posted in Top 6 at 4:59 am by Sam

Movies seem to be particularly well suited for satire, and political satire in particular. We came up with so many great political satires, it was difficult to prune them out to six apiece for Episode 39. But we persevered, and we emerged triumphant. What are your favorite political satires?

As always, we recommend listening to the episode before reading further.

Top 6: Rock and Roll Movies

Posted in Top 6 at 4:59 am by Sam

Usually when we think of musicals, we think of classic Broadway or MGM spectacles, but starting on the fringes of filmmaking and emerging into the forefront are rock and roll musicals, which is some ways make up a genre all its own. It’s not just the music that’s different, it’s a whole different cultural mentality and value system that comes with it. When compiling our lists for Episode 38’s Top 6 Rock and Roll Movies segment, we discovered that there actually aren’t that many good ones, but maybe we’re not the people to ask about that anyway. Still, we were able to come up with six favorites apiece, and here they are. Chime in with yours!

As always, we recommend listening to the episode before reading further.

Top 6: Movies With a Strong Sense of Place

Posted in Top 6 at 4:59 am by Sam

For Episode 36, our Top 6 segment is about movies with a strong sense of place. As often happens, we each interpreted the topic a little differently. Stephen took a broader view, selecting films that are evocative of larger areas and times — Los Angeles in the 1980s, for example — while Sam thought more in terms of individual sets that create a specific mood. Either way, the point is that the setting of the story must be so compelling and crucial to the film that the story could not be transplanted anywhere else without fundamentally changing its feel. In such cases, sometimes it is said that the setting, whatever it is, is a character in the story.

Do you have favorite movies that are inextricably tied to their settings? Let us know!

As always, we recommend listening to the episode before reading further.

Top 6: Movies We’ve Seen Over and Over

Posted in Top 6 at 10:34 am by Sam

Episode 35’s Top 6 segment is about the movies we’ve seen over and over again. There are tens of thousands of movies out there, so why do we sometimes pick the same ones to watch over and over? Some of us do it more than others, but probably all of us have at least a title or two that we keep coming back to. In many cases, these may not even be our favorite movies. What are yours?

As always, we recommend listening to the episode before reading further.

Top 6: Funniest Movie Titles

Posted in Top 6 at 4:59 am by Sam

Episode 34’s Top 6 segment is short and sweet. What are the funniest movie titles? What makes this list interesting and different is that you don’t have to have seen the movies to pick them. We don’t really care if the movies themselves are funny, or even if they’re supposed to be — all we’re concerned about is whether the titles themselves are funny.

What are your favorite funny movie titles?

As always, we recommend listening to the episode before reading further.
